Freeze-Thaw and Salt: Why Cleveland Concrete Fails
The mechanism behind flaking, spalling, and cracking in Northeast Ohio slabs, and the specific concrete choices that stop it before the first winter.
Every concrete complaint in Cleveland traces back to the same physics. Understanding it takes five minutes and makes you far better at judging a quote, because it tells you exactly which line items are protecting your investment and which are decoration.
The freeze-thaw mechanism
Concrete is porous, more like a hard sponge than a solid stone. Rain, snowmelt, and humidity work into those pores. When the temperature drops below freezing, that trapped water expands by roughly nine percent. With nowhere to go, the expansion generates internal pressure high enough to fracture the cement paste holding the aggregate together.
Then it thaws. The newly widened pores take on more water. It freezes again. Northeast Ohio delivers this cycle dozens of times each winter, and the shoulder seasons are the worst because temperatures swing across the freezing point every day or two rather than staying reliably cold.
What road salt adds
Ohio salts its roads heavily, and vehicles carry that salt onto driveways and aprons. Salt worsens the damage on two fronts. It is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls additional moisture into the concrete, so the slab stays wetter than it otherwise would. And by depressing the freezing point of surface water, it multiplies the number of freeze-thaw transitions the surface experiences over a season.
The visible result is scaling: the top layer of paste flaking away in patches, exposing the aggregate underneath and leaving a rough, pitted surface. Scaling is the signature Northeast Ohio concrete failure, and once it starts it accelerates, because the roughened surface holds still more water.
Air entrainment, the actual defense
The engineering answer to freeze-thaw is air entrainment: an admixture added at the plant that generates millions of microscopic, evenly distributed air bubbles throughout the concrete. Those voids act as pressure-relief chambers. When water in the surrounding pores freezes and expands, it pushes into the nearby air voids instead of fracturing the paste.
For exterior flatwork in a climate like Cleveland's, air-entrained concrete is the baseline specification, generally in the range of five to seven percent air content. It is not an upgrade to negotiate over. Non-air-entrained concrete poured outdoors in Northeast Ohio will deteriorate, regardless of how carefully it was finished.
The other durability factors
- Compressive strength. Exterior flatwork here warrants 4,000 psi or better. Higher strength generally means a lower water-to-cement ratio, which means fewer and finer pores for water to occupy in the first place.
- Water-to-cement ratio. Adding water at the truck to make concrete easier to place is the classic finishing shortcut, and it directly weakens the surface layer, exactly where scaling starts.
- Finishing practice. Overworking the surface or finishing while bleed water is still present pulls excess water and fines to the top, creating a weak skin that scales early.
- Curing. Concrete gains strength through hydration, a reaction with water, so keeping moisture in the slab during the first days produces a denser, more durable surface. A slab that dries out too fast is weakest precisely at the exposed face.
- Drainage. Water that pools on or under a slab is water available to freeze. Slope and base drainage are durability features, not just conveniences.
The first winter rule
New concrete has not reached full strength, and its surface is at its most vulnerable during the first months. Applying deicing salt to a slab in its first winter is the most common way homeowners damage brand-new concrete. Use sand for traction instead, and let the slab get through one full season untouched by chemicals.
