Protecting New Concrete Through Its First Winter
The most common way Cleveland homeowners ruin brand-new concrete is by salting it the first winter. Here is the full protection schedule.
You have just spent several thousand dollars on new flatwork. What happens over the next twelve months determines whether it looks new in year ten or starts flaking in year three.
The first month
- Days 1 to 2: stay off entirely. No foot traffic, no pets, no bikes. The surface is still soft enough to mark.
- Days 2 to 7: foot traffic is generally fine, vehicles are not. The slab is gaining strength but is nowhere near full capacity.
- Around day 7: normal passenger vehicles can typically use the driveway, depending on conditions and what the contractor specifies.
- Through day 28 and beyond: keep heavy vehicles off. Concrete continues gaining strength for weeks, and a loaded delivery truck or dumpster on a young slab is a real risk.
The contractor pouring the work gives the specific schedule for your slab and the conditions it was placed in. Follow theirs over any general rule.
Curing: keep the moisture in
Concrete does not dry to gain strength, it reacts with water. Crews use curing compounds, wet coverings, or plastic sheeting to hold moisture in during the critical early days, and that process produces a denser, harder surface, exactly the layer that resists scaling later. If your contractor applied a curing compound, leave it alone. If they ask you to keep a slab damp for a period, that request is doing real work.
The first winter: no deicers, at all
This is the single most important rule on this page. New concrete has not reached full strength and its surface is at peak vulnerability during the first winter. Deicing chemicals applied in that window cause the surface scaling that homeowners then live with for the life of the slab.
For traction, use sand. It provides grip without any chemical attack on the concrete. Plain sand, or a sand-heavy traction product with no chloride content, gets you through the first season safely.
One more thing to watch: salt tracked off the street by vehicles and salt splashed from a plowed road onto an apron. You cannot eliminate that entirely, but rinsing the slab during a winter thaw helps flush accumulated chloride off the surface.
Deicers ranked, for later winters
Once the slab is past its first winter and sealed, some chemical use becomes reasonable. Not all deicers are equal:
- Sand: no chemical effect at all. Always the safest option.
- Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA): the gentlest chemical option on concrete, though more expensive and less effective at very low temperatures.
- Sodium chloride (rock salt): the common and cheap one, and the primary driver of scaling damage in this region.
- Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride: effective at lower temperatures than rock salt, but chemically aggressive toward concrete.
- Ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate, sometimes found in fertilizer-based products: actively destructive to concrete. Avoid entirely.
Sealing
A penetrating sealer soaks into the surface and reduces water and chloride absorption, which is precisely the mechanism behind freeze-thaw and salt damage. Timing matters: sealing is done after the concrete has cured, not immediately after the pour, since sealing too early can trap moisture in the slab. Your contractor will specify when.
After the initial application, resealing every few years keeps the protection current. Surfaces taking direct salt exposure, aprons and steps especially, benefit from a shorter interval than a sheltered back patio. Snow removal without damage
- Use a plastic-bladed shovel rather than metal, particularly on a decorative or stamped surface.
- Set snow blower skid shoes so the auger clears the surface instead of scraping it.
- Clear snow before it gets packed down and turns to ice, which reduces the temptation to reach for chemicals.
- If you hire a plow service, tell them there is new concrete and ask them to set the blade accordingly.
Drainage upkeep
Keep downspouts discharging away from the slab, not beside it. Clear leaves and debris out of low spots where meltwater collects. Water that sits on or beside concrete is water that will freeze there, and over enough winters it does exactly what the freeze-thaw guide describes.
